Booking choice: The Matthias Church concert, from $67 per person. Check dates Tour details
As of 9 October 2026, neither the Castle District market nor the Várkert Bazár has announced its 2026 dates. Both have run every Advent in recent years, and the pattern is steady: opening at the end of November, running past Christmas into early January.
Below, the 2025 programme is labelled as such, so you can plan around it, and the fixed dates (free bastion days, transport, closures) are the real 2026 ones.
The quick answer
The Castle District Advent market has opened on the last weekend of November in recent years, at Szentháromság tér by Matthias Church; in 2025 it ran from 28 November to 4 January. The upper towers of Fisherman's Bastion are free from 24 to 31 December. The 2026 dates are not announced as of early October.
Is there a Christmas market at Buda Castle in 2026?
Almost certainly, but the dates are not out. Expect it from the end of November on Szentháromság tér.
The market on Szentháromság tér, the square between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, is small: a few dozen wooden stalls with crafts, chimney cake, sausages and mulled wine. In 2025 it opened on 28 November and ran to 4 January, per Xpatloop, with candle-lighting on Advent Sundays. It trades by day, and the stalls close in the early evening.
Compared with the two big Pest markets at Vörösmarty tér and St Stephen's Basilica, this one is quieter and has the better backdrop. It is a stop on a castle walk, not an evening out. Come for an hour, then go down to Pest for dinner.
What ran on Castle Hill at Advent 2025?
A market by the church, a terrace with a giant tree and nativity scene, and a run of concerts at the Várkert Bazár.
The state-run Palace District added its own programme in 2025 under the name Advent in the Buda Castle Palace District, from 27 November 2025 to 11 January 2026. The heart of it was the terrace by the Fishing Children's Well, with a tall tree, a wooden nativity scene and food stalls. Down at the Várkert Bazár, weekend concerts ran from jazz to a choir, with a New Year's Eve party on 30 December, per Daily News Hungary.
Treat the table below as the pattern, not a promise. The 2026 programme will be announced on the Várkert Bazár site, usually in November.
| Event (2025 edition) | Where | 2025 dates |
|---|---|---|
| Castle District Advent market | Szentháromság tér | 28 Nov 2025 to 4 Jan 2026 |
| Tree, nativity, food terrace | Fishing Children's Well terrace | 27 Nov 2025 to 11 Jan 2026 |
| Advent concerts | Várkert Bazár | Weekends, 29 Nov to 30 Dec |
| Craft market | De la Motte-Beer Palace, Dísz tér | 12 to 14 and 19 to 21 Dec |
| Family workshops | Várkert Bazár foyer | Advent Sundays, 10:00 to 15:00 |
When is Fisherman's Bastion free over Christmas?
Every day from 24 to 31 December, and on 1 January. From 2 January the towers charge again.
The lower terraces of the bastion are free all year. The upper towers cost HUF 1,700 (HUF 850 reduced) and are paid from 09:00 to 19:00 in winter. The operator's 2026 notice sets the paid period as 2 January to 23 December, which leaves Christmas week and New Year's Day free.
Free days bring crowds. On 27 to 30 December the towers fill by late morning; go at 09:00, or else after dark, when the paid hours are over anyway and the Parliament across the river is lit. More on the towers, the view and the free half in our Fisherman's Bastion guide.

What is open on Castle Hill over the holidays?
The grounds never close. The funicular runs daily except 14 and 28 December; museums and the church keep short holiday hours.
The courtyards, streets and terraces are open around the clock, Christmas Day included. The funicular runs 08:00 to 22:00, but BKV lists Monday 14 and Monday 28 December 2026 as closure days; bus 16 runs throughout, on holiday timetables. St Stephen's Hall opens daily 10:00 to 18:00 in normal weeks, per its ticket page; museums in Budapest usually close on 24 to 26 December, so check before you go.
Matthias Church is a working parish. It closes to tourists for Masses and liturgical events, and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are its busiest services. Visit on a weekday between Christmas and New Year, or book the evening concert in Matthias Church, which runs through the season and puts you inside after dark.
| Place | Usual winter hours | Christmas notes 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Castle grounds, lower bastion | 24 hours | Open every day |
| Fisherman's Bastion towers | 09:00 to 19:00, HUF 1,700 | Free 24 to 31 Dec and 1 Jan |

| St Stephen's Hall | 10:00 to 18:00, HUF 4,900 | Check 24 to 26 Dec |
| Matthias Church | From 09:00, HUF 3,400 | Closed during services |
What should you know about Castle Hill in winter?
It gets dark before 16:00, the cobbles freeze, and the wind on the bastion is cold. Plan the day around the light.
In late December the sun sets around 15:55 in Budapest. Do the bastion and the palace terraces from 10:00 to 14:00, then take a museum or St Stephen's Hall as the light goes. The streets are cobbled and steep in places; wear boots with grip. Daytime highs hover just above freezing.
Go up by bus 16 instead of walking the paths when it is icy. At night, the hill is quiet and beautiful, and the vampires night tour runs through winter for anyone who wants the stories with it. For the view of the castle lit up from the water, the Danube night cruise is an hour on a heated boat; it is the view, not a castle visit. Month-by-month advice is in our guide to the best time to visit Buda Castle.
