Booking choice: The castle walk with St Stephen's Hall, from $29 per person. Check dates Tour details
"Buda Castle tickets" is a confusing search because the castle is not one attraction. Castle Hill is a 1.5 km ridge with a palace at the south end, a medieval town in the middle and a church with a neo-Romanesque terrace beside it. The streets, courtyards and terraces are open to anyone at any hour. Six different operators sell tickets for what is inside: the rebuilt St Stephen's Hall, the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery, Matthias Church, the upper towers of Fisherman's Bastion and the funicular that carries you up.
Prices below come from each operator's own page, checked in October 2026: St Stephen's Hall, the Castle Museum, the National Gallery, Matthias Church and BKV for the funicular. All are in Hungarian forints (HUF). At October 2026 rates, HUF 1,000 is about $3.
The quick answer
Walking around Buda Castle is free. The main paid doors are St Stephen's Hall (HUF 4,900), the Castle Museum (HUF 3,800), the National Gallery (HUF 5,800), Matthias Church (HUF 3,400), its tower (HUF 4,000) and the bastion's upper towers (HUF 1,700). The funicular costs HUF 4,500 one way and is closed 5 to 16 October 2026.

Is there one ticket for Buda Castle?
No. The grounds are free, and each building sells its own ticket. The nearest thing to a castle pass is the Budapest Card, which covers the palace museums but not the church or the funicular.
The Royal Palace itself is a set of buildings, labelled A to F, that house three institutions: the Hungarian National Gallery (A to D), the Budapest History Museum's Castle Museum (E) and the National Széchényi Library (F). St Stephen's Hall sits in the same wing as the Castle Museum and shares its entrance from the Lion Court. Up the hill in the old town, Matthias Church is run by the parish, and Fisherman's Bastion by the District I council.
What costs nothing: the palace courtyards and terraces, the Lion Court, the Matthias Fountain, the Savoy Terrace with its view of Parliament, the Castle District streets, the lower terraces of Fisherman's Bastion, and the Várkert Bazár gardens on the river side. The what is free guide walks through them in order.

How much does St Stephen's Hall cost?
HUF 4,900 for adults and HUF 2,450 for children, students and seniors, with a tablet guide. It is free with a Budapest Card.
St Stephen's Hall is the one interior on the palace side that most visitors want. It is a state room from around 1900, burnt out in 1945 and rebuilt from Alajos Hauszmann's plans, with the largest Zsolnay ceramic fireplace in Hungary. Entry runs in 15-minute slots from 10:00, with the last at 17:15. The visitor rules are strict: a ticket is valid for its slot only, and if you arrive late you lose it.
The Castle Museum's own price list shows what the HUF 4,900 ticket really includes: the hall plus the medieval and modern palace history exhibitions next door. Another HUF 1,000 adds the rest of the museum, which is why the combined ticket costs HUF 5,900. On Saturdays the 10:00 slot is a guided tour in Hungarian; the rest of the day runs on tablets. Residents of District I get 20% off.
Bags go in the cloakroom, which is compulsory, and backpacks are not allowed inside. The Royal Palace guide covers what you see in the room and how long to allow.
| Ticket | Adult | Child, student, senior | Includes |

| Guided walk + hall, Buda Castle Walks | $29 | Not under 12 | 1 hour outside, 30 minutes in the hall, live guide |

Check dates Tour detailsWhat do the museums in the palace cost?
The Castle Museum is HUF 3,800 and open every day. The National Gallery is HUF 5,800 and closed on Mondays. Both are free with a Budapest Card.
The Castle Museum (Budapest History Museum) in building E tells the story of the city and of the palace itself. Its lower levels are the real reason to go: the vaulted rooms of the medieval royal palace, uncovered under the 18th and 19th century wings, and a set of Gothic statues dug up in 1974. Student and senior reductions (HUF 1,900) apply only to EEA nationals, and so does free entry for over-70s. Last entry is 17:30.
The Hungarian National Gallery fills buildings A to D under the green dome. The gallery's ticket page lists HUF 5,800 full price and HUF 2,900 reduced, with an audio guide for HUF 1,200. One detail most visitors miss: the dome terrace is included in any admission ticket and is open from 10:00 to 17:00. That view is the best value on the palace side. The gallery is closed on Mondays, which catches out a lot of people who plan their castle day for the start of the week.
How much is Matthias Church, and is the tower worth it?
The church is HUF 3,400 for adults and the tower HUF 4,000. Buy the tower only if you want the 197-step climb and a 10-minute guided talk at the top.
The church's ticket page has the full list. Students and seniors pay HUF 2,700, a family ticket (two adults and two or more children) is HUF 9,500, and under-6s are free. The audio guide costs HUF 1,600 and runs on your own phone; the first three chapters are free. A church ticket is valid on any day in the calendar year, so you can buy it ahead without fixing a date.
The tower is different. It runs in 30-minute slots from 9:30 to 11:30 and from 14:00 to 16:00, the ticket is valid only for your slot, there is no lift and no toilet, and every ticket includes a short guided talk. Tickets are non-refundable on both.
The church closes to visitors for Mass, weddings and state visits, and hours on Saturday and Sunday are shorter. Dress rules are enforced at the door: knees and shoulders covered, and no costumes or wedding clothes. The Fisherman's Bastion guide covers how the church and the bastion fit together on one visit.
| Matthias Church ticket | Price (HUF) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | 3,400 | Valid any day in the calendar year |
| Adult + audio guide | 5,000 | Audio guide on your own phone |
| Student / senior | 2,700 | Show ID at the door |
| Family | 9,500 | Two adults and more than one child |
| Tower, adult | 4,000 | 197 steps, fixed slot, short guided talk |
| Tower, student / senior | 3,300 | Same rules |
| Under 6 | Free | Church and tower |
What about Fisherman's Bastion and the funicular?
The bastion's upper towers cost HUF 1,700 by day and nothing at night. The funicular costs HUF 4,500 one way, and the bus does the same climb for HUF 500.
Fisherman's Bastion is the most misunderstood ticket on the hill. Only the upper towers and the top walkway charge, and only between 9:00 and 19:00 from October to May (21:00 in summer). The lower terraces, the arcades and the staircase are free at any hour. The ticket desk takes cards only; full-price tickets can also be bought on the council's ticket site. Reduced tickets (HUF 850) are for under-14s, students and over-65s.
The funicular is the most expensive two minutes in Budapest. BKV's fare table lists HUF 4,500 one way and HUF 5,500 return for adults, HUF 2,000 and HUF 3,000 for children aged 3 to 14, and free under 3. Normal Budapest travel passes are not valid. It is closed for maintenance from 5 to 16 October 2026 and on Mondays of odd-numbered weeks.
Bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér stops at Clark Ádám tér at the foot of the funicular and then climbs to Dísz tér, a few minutes' walk from the palace. A BKK single ticket costs HUF 500 bought in advance, or HUF 700 from the driver (BKK prices). The getting there guide lists every way up.
Is the Budapest Card worth it for Buda Castle?
Only if you will use the transport and visit at least two palace museums. It covers St Stephen's Hall, the Castle Museum and the National Gallery, but not the church, the bastion or the funicular.
The classic Budapest Card costs about €53 for 24 hours, €69 for 48 hours and €85 for 72 hours (prices from May 2026). On Castle Hill it gives one free visit each to St Stephen's Hall (worth HUF 4,900), the Castle Museum (HUF 3,800) and the National Gallery (HUF 5,800). Together that is HUF 14,500, or about $44. It also includes buses 16, 16A and 116, and a free guided walk in Buda.
The Budapest Card Plus adds a free return ride on the funicular, according to BKV. The standard card does not include it. For a single castle day the card rarely pays for itself unless you add a Pest museum and use the metro. On a three-day trip with the gallery, the palace and the thermal baths, it usually does.
| Castle Hill sight | Door price (HUF) | With Budapest Card |
|---|---|---|
| St Stephen's Hall | 4,900 | Free (book your slot) |
| Castle Museum | 3,800 | Free |
| National Gallery | 5,800 | Free |
| Matthias Church | 3,400 | Full price |
| Bastion upper towers | 1,700 | Full price |
| Funicular, return | 5,500 | Free with Card Plus only |
| Bus 16 / 16A / 116 | 500 per ride | Free |
When does a guided tour cost less than doing it yourself?
When the tour includes an entry you were going to pay for anyway. The cheapest walks include no tickets at all.
Most castle tours on GetYourGuide and Viator are walks around the free parts with a guide. That is fine, but read what the price includes. Here is what each one gets you into:
- Castle walk with St Stephen's Hall ($29): the hall entry (HUF 4,900, about $15 at the door) plus an hour's guided walk. The best-value combination on the palace side.
- Walking tour with a historian ($61): Matthias Church entry with live commentary, the bastion and the palace in 2.5 hours.
- Absolute Tours walk ($70): a licensed guide and a guided visit inside Matthias Church, skipping the ticket queue.
- Budget Castle District walk ($13): two hours with a guide, entry tickets not included.
- Tip-based castle walk ($3 booking fee): the guide earns only what you tip at the end.
- Matthias Church and tower ticket ($25): church plus tower, which cost HUF 7,400 (about $23) at the door. You pay a little extra to skip the desk.
If you only want the views, walk for free and spend the money on one interior. If you want to understand what you are looking at, a guided walk with an entry included is better value than a cheap walk plus separate tickets.
The palace district with a guide, then 30 minutes inside St Stephen's Hall. Headsets, hall ticket and timed slot included.
