Triptobudapest · Batthyány tér to Castle Hill
A two-hour walk from Batthyány tér up to Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion and the Royal Palace with a local guide from Triptobudapest. Pick it if you'd rather pay the guide what the tour was worth at the end: the $3 booking fee goes to admin, and the guide earns only your tip.

This is a so-called free tour, and the deal is straightforward: you pay a small booking fee on Viator, which covers administration and not the guide. The guide works for tips. Guests often say what they think the morning was worth; one put it at 15 to 20 euros each. Budget that, and it's still among the cheaper ways to see the hill with a guide.
You meet at the Lipóti bakery kiosk on Batthyány tér, by the metro exit, on the Buda riverbank. The guide leads you up a gentle path to the hill: Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion from outside, the medieval Jewish prayer house, the National Archives, the statue of András Hadik, then the Royal Palace, ending at Prince Eugene's statue on the Savoy Terrace. The walk up is part of the tour, which saves you working out the funicular or bus.
It needs at least four people to run, with a full refund if it doesn't; groups go up to 30. No entry tickets are included, so it's an outside-only tour.

★★★★★Great guide Andre, showed us around the castle district and explained the history and stories behind the beautiful buildings. Very clear English speaking and welcomed questions from the group. Nice size group and Andre lead us up to the castle in an easy manor, along a path which wasn't too steep and he paused for breaks along the way explaining the different areas as we went. Whilst it's a free tour, it's based on tips and our guide and experience was worth 15 to 20 euros each as we had a lovely morning.
