Fisherman's Bastion guide

Fisherman's Bastion is the white, turreted terrace beside Matthias Church, and the best view of Parliament in Budapest. Half of it is free all the time, and the other half is free before breakfast and after dinner. Here is how it works, when to go, and how to combine it with the church.

Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) looks medieval and is not. Frigyes Schulek built it between 1895 and 1902, as part of the works for Hungary's thousand-year celebrations and as a frame for his restoration of Matthias Church. It never defended anything. Its seven turrets stand for the seven Magyar tribes who settled the Carpathian Basin in 895, and the name recalls a fishermen's guild said to have guarded this stretch of the medieval wall.

Today it is the busiest viewpoint in Budapest. Prices and hours below are from the District I council's ticket site and the published 2026 tariff.

The quick answer

The lower terraces, arcades and staircases of Fisherman's Bastion are free at any hour. The upper towers cost HUF 1,700 (HUF 850 reduced) between 9:00 and 19:00 from October to May, and until 21:00 from June to September. Outside those hours the whole bastion is free. Go before 9:00 or after dark.

Is Fisherman's Bastion free?

Mostly. The lower terraces, arcades and stairs are free 24 hours a day. Only the upper towers and top walkway charge, and only by day.

The bastion has two levels. The lower one, a long terrace with arches facing the river, is where most photos are taken, and it never closes. The upper level, reached through a turnstile, is the walkway along the top with the turrets. Between 9:00 and 19:00 (21:00 from June to September) it costs HUF 1,700. Outside those hours the turnstiles are open and it is free.

It is also free all day on Hungary's national holidays and over Christmas: 1 January, 15 March, 20 August, 23 October and 24 to 31 December.

Is it worth paying for the upper towers?

Only if you are there in the middle of the day and want a photo without crowds. Otherwise come before 9:00 or after dark, when it costs nothing.

The upper level is a few metres higher than the free terraces. You get the same view of Parliament and the Danube, a clearer foreground and fewer people. You do not get a different view. The ticket desk takes cards only, no cash in forints or euros, and reduced tickets are sold only there, after you show ID. Full-price tickets can be bought online in advance.

Our advice: if your schedule puts you on the hill at noon, see the free lower level, then go into Matthias Church, and come back for the upper towers after 19:00. That also gives you the bastion with the city lit up.

When is the best time to visit Fisherman's Bastion?

Before 9:00 for empty arcades and soft light, or after dark for the floodlit city and free towers. Midday is the worst.

The bastion faces east across the river, so the sun rises behind Parliament. At sunrise and in the first hours after, the light falls on the white stone from the front and the terraces are close to empty. Photographers work here from dawn for that reason. Coach groups start arriving in late morning and the terraces stay full through the afternoon.

Evening is the other good window. The upper towers become free when the paid hours end, the bastion is floodlit, and Parliament glows across the river. In summer the paid window runs until 21:00, after sunset, so a sunset visit in July means paying or waiting. The best time guide goes through the seasons.

What is there to see at the bastion?

The seven turrets, the statue of St Stephen, the long arcades over the river, and the view of Parliament, the Danube and Margaret Island.

The bastion runs along the eastern edge of the hill above the river. Its style is neo-Romanesque, a 19th-century take on the 12th century, built in white limestone to set off the church. Look for:

  • The equestrian statue of St Stephen, Hungary's first king, between the bastion and the church. He faces the church, not the river.
  • The seven turrets, one for each Magyar tribe, with Parliament framed between them across the river.
  • The grand staircase on the south side, which climbs from the Víziváros (Watertown) district below. Walk down it to Fő utca for a quieter way off the hill.
  • Matthias Church's roof, covered in coloured Zsolnay tiles, which you see best from the bastion's upper walkway.

The terrace café on the upper level belongs to a restaurant. A coffee there buys you a seat with the view, at restaurant prices.

How do you combine the bastion with Matthias Church?

They share the same square. Allow 15 to 30 minutes in the church (HUF 3,400) and as long as you like on the bastion. The church is closed to visitors during services.

Matthias Church, officially the Church of Our Lady, stands right behind the bastion on Holy Trinity Square. Kings were crowned here, including Franz Joseph in 1867. Schulek restored it in the 1870s to 1890s, and the walls and pillars inside are painted top to bottom in red, green and gold patterns.

Tickets are HUF 3,400 for adults and HUF 2,700 for students and seniors, from the church's own page. The tower is a separate ticket (HUF 4,000, 197 steps, fixed slots). The church follows its visitor rules: skirts or trousers to the knee, covered shoulders, no costumes. Opening is usually 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, with Saturday mornings only and Sunday afternoons only, and the church closes for Mass and weddings.

How do you get to Fisherman's Bastion, and is it accessible?

Bus 16 stops at Szentháromság tér, next to the bastion. On foot, the south staircase climbs from Batthyány tér in about 15 minutes. The lower terrace is reachable without steps from the square; the upper level is not.

The bastion sits on the river side of Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér), in the middle of the Castle District. Bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér stops right there, and buses 16A and 116 from Széll Kálmán tér stop a short walk away. From the palace it is a flat 10-minute walk north along Tárnok utca. The funicular's top station is at the palace end, so even when it runs, you still walk.

On foot from the river, take the metro M2 to Batthyány tér, walk south along Fő utca and climb the staircase that leads straight up into the bastion's south end. It is the most dramatic way to arrive, and the steepest.

For wheelchair users and prams: the square and the lower terrace by the church are level with the street, though the cobbles are rough. The arcades below and the upper towers involve steps. The getting there guide covers the step-free routes up the hill.

Is a guided tour worth it for the bastion?

Not for the bastion alone, which is self-explanatory. For the bastion, the church and the old town together, a guide adds the stories you would otherwise miss.

The bastion is a viewpoint. You do not need anyone to explain that Parliament is beautiful. A guide earns their fee inside Matthias Church, which is full of coronation history and heraldry, and in the old town, where the houses hide medieval details behind Baroque fronts.

For a guided visit inside the church, the options are the historian tour ($61, 2.5 hours, rated 4.9) and the Absolute Tours walk ($70, 2 hours). The budget walk ($13) and the walk with royal cake ($19) cover the bastion and the old town from outside, with no entry tickets. The tickets guide compares what each one includes.
