The palace walk with the hall inside

An hour around the Royal Palace terraces and courtyards with a guide from Buda Castle Walks, then 30 minutes inside St Stephen's Hall, the state room rebuilt from its 1900 designs. Pick it because it is the one tour that gets you into the palace itself, with the hall's strict timed entry sorted for you.

Buda Castle Walk with St Stephen's Hall

About this experience

Buda Castle Walks is the walking-tour arm run on behalf of the castle's own management, and this is its most booked programme. The first hour is outdoors: the Savoy Terrace with its view over the Danube to Parliament, the Lion Court, the Matthias Fountain, the palace gardens. The guide covers 800 years in that hour, from the Mongol invasion and the Golden Age under King Matthias to the 1945 siege and the communist rebuild. Then you go inside St Stephen's Hall for the last 30 minutes.

The hall is the reason to book. It was the palace's showpiece, a room of carved wood, Zsolnay ceramics and a royal throne corner, looted and burnt out in the war and rebuilt under the National Hauszmann Program. It is the only palace interior restored to its original look, and it runs on timed entry: latecomers are turned away, backpacks go into a compulsory cloakroom. On your own the ticket is HUF 4,900 at szentistvanterem.hu, or HUF 5,900 with the Castle Museum exhibitions. This walk folds the hall into one $29 booking with a guide on top.

Two honest caveats. Rebuilding work is still going on around the palace, so expect some noise, fences and the odd lorry. And the meeting point is hard to find because of closures and level changes; the listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes early, and guests report losing time looking for it. Look for the turquoise Buda Castle Walks umbrella. The walk does not enter Matthias Church or the National Gallery.

  • The Savoy Terrace view over the Danube and Parliament

Tips before you book

  • Be at the Savoy Terrace 15 minutes early. The tour starts on time and latecomers can't join, partly because the hall slot is fixed.
  • Leave the big backpack at the hotel. St Stephen's Hall has a compulsory cloakroom and no backpacks inside.
  • The funicular is closed 5 to 16 October 2026 for maintenance. Take bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér or the free lifts at the Várkert Bazár; see how to get up the hill.
  • Have a Budapest Card? The hall is free with it, so you'd be paying only for the guide. Compare with the free terraces and a solo hall ticket.
  • It runs rain or shine, and the first hour is outdoors. Bring a jacket.
