Matthias Church and its tower

A combined ticket for Matthias Church, the coronation church on Castle Hill, and a timed climb of its 197-step tower. Pick it if you want both sorted before you arrive and are happy to pay a little over the door price for that.

Matthias Church & Tower Entry Ticket

About this experience

Matthias Church, officially the Church of Our Lady, is where Hungary crowned its last two kings. Its tiled Zsolnay roof is the one in everyone's photo from Fisherman's Bastion, and inside every surface is painted. The tower ticket adds a timed climb of 197 steps to a terrace about 47 m up, with a short guided talk; there is no lift and no toilet in the tower.

Price check. At the door, matyas-templom.hu lists the church at HUF 3,400 for adults and the tower at HUF 4,000, so HUF 7,400 for both. This GetYourGuide ticket is $25. You pay a little extra to have it booked ahead. One guest said they didn't think it was worth $25. If you're fine queueing, buy at the church.

Read the voucher rules. Your actual tickets arrive by email the day before; the GetYourGuide voucher alone won't get you in. The church ticket is valid any day in the calendar year, while the tower is tied to your slot. Bring ID. The church closes for Mass, weddings and state visits, and is usually open to visitors only on weekday daytimes, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.

  • The coronation church of Hungary's last kings
  • Painted walls and Zsolnay roof tiles
  • A timed climb of 197 steps up the tower

This was a worth while experience. Our tour guide did a marvelous job explaining absolutely everything to us. We didn't have to queue up as we had bought tickets in advance. Worth every Cent!!

Matthias Church is beautiful both inside and out, and definitely worth a visit while exploring the Buda Castle area. We visited Buda Castle first, and the church was just a short walk away, making it easy to include in the same trip. The interior is stunning, and the nearby Fisherman's Bastion offers breathtaking views of Budapest. It's a great spot to experience the city's history, architecture, and some of its best panoramic views.
