Budapest Explorers · Castle District, Castle Hill
Two and a half hours from the Holy Trinity Column to the Royal Palace with a guide who studied the subject, including entry to Matthias Church with live commentary. Pick it if you want the whole ridge done properly in one go, with the church interior explained rather than just seen.

This is the longest and best-rated of the standard castle walks: 4.9 from more than a thousand reviews. It starts at the Holy Trinity Column, goes inside Matthias Church, out onto Fisherman's Bastion for the Parliament view, then along the residential streets past Sándor Palace (the President's office) to the Royal Palace, the Savoy Terrace, the Matthias Fountain and the palace gardens. Guides are trained historians, and the tone is closer to a good lecture on foot than a script.
Matthias Church entry is the big inclusion. The church costs HUF 3,400 at the door, and having someone explain the Zsolnay tiles, the painted walls and the coronation history is what makes it click; one guest said the explanation was what made the visit. The palace interiors are not included. You finish by the museums, which you can visit after.
At $61 it costs twice the St Stephen's Hall walk. You're paying for length and for the guide. The walk is mostly outdoors and runs in the rain with more indoor stops added. Guests report only short breaks, so bring water. Matthias Church closes for services and weddings, which can shuffle the order on the day.
Meet at the plague column on Szentháromság tér, opposite Matthias Church.
The coronation church, its painted walls and tiled roof, with the guide talking you through it.
The free lower terraces and the view over the Danube to Parliament.
Medieval lanes, burgher houses and the President's palace on the way south.
The Savoy Terrace, Matthias Fountain and palace gardens. The museums are right there if you want to stay.
★★★★★Petra was a wealth of knowledge. This was a walking history class. We loved it.
★★★★★Monica was a great tour guide, gave a us a great understanding of the city, especially about the Buda side that we were touring. Highly recommend if you want to get a good understanding of the Buda city. Some amazing views of the city through out the tour and the amazing church with its internal colourful walls. Highly recommend if you want to learn more about the city
★★★★★Petra was extremely knowledgeable, a good sense of humour and obviously loves her job. She was patient and waited for a couple of late comers, always offered shade when chatting and she always made sure we were all accounted for and included in the conversation. would definitely recommend. The church was lovely but what made it better was the explanation behind the ornate sculptures, drawings and history of the patrons.
★★★★★Leti was an excellent and informative guide. We learned a lot and enjoyed the tour.
