Buda Castle Walks · Palace District, Castle Hill
Ninety minutes on the 52-day siege of Buda in 1944-45, told from survivors' diaries: first in the palace district, then underground in a house cellar and an original wartime bomb shelter in the cave system. Pick it if you want the 20th century on Castle Hill told seriously, in the places people hid.

On Christmas Eve 1944 the Red Army closed the ring around German-occupied Budapest. The siege lasted 52 days, and tens of thousands crowded into the cellars and caves under Castle Hill: soldiers, the wounded, civilians, along with the palace's treasures. This tour, run by the same Buda Castle Walks team as the St Stephen's Hall walk, tells that story from diaries and memoirs.
You start at Dísz tér 15 and walk through the palace district, then go down into the cave system to visit the cellar of an old house and an authentic bomb shelter. The tour ends at Szentháromság tér, by Matthias Church. Guests describe it as sobering and humane rather than a list of battles, and many say the closing message stays with them.
It is recommended for ages 14 and up, it is not suitable for anyone with claustrophobia or limited mobility, and there are steps. Underground it is cool and the walls can be wet. The tour starts promptly and doesn't wait for latecomers.
Look for the turquoise Buda Castle Walks umbrella at the big green gate next to the Posta building.
Where the fighting happened, and how the palace was hit and emptied.
Down into the cave system under the residential quarter.
An original wartime shelter, and the diaries of those who survived the cold, hunger and darkness.
You come up by Matthias Church after 90 minutes.
★★★★★Jonas was our host, and he was extremely knowledgable, personable and had a great sense of humour. He kept the pace of the tour gentle, filled the silence as it was a quiet group and gave information at a digestable tempo. The tour was fascinating, the information very true to human experience, which my party found humbling and grounding. The ending message resonated greatly and will remain with us for some time. I greatly reccomend this tour, and would likely do it again in the future. P.s. don't touch the walls, they may be wet.
★★★★★Excellent tour of the caves and talking about the part they played in history. They were huge and a great experience. Rita was an excellent guide who was very knowledgable
