Booking choice: The Buda Castle Cave tour, from $19 per person. Check dates Tour details
The cave system below the Castle District has been a quarry, a wine store, a prison and an air-raid shelter. Since 2019 a stretch of it has been open again as a show cave, managed by the national park that runs Budapest's other protected caves.
Two things catch people out: the tickets, which are only sold online, and the name, which three different underground attractions on the hill are sometimes sold under. This post sorts out both.
The quick answer
Buy Buda Castle Cave tickets online in advance: there are no sales at the entrance. The normal tour covers 1.5 km in about 1.5 hours (age 12 and up, meeting at the Holy Trinity Column); the short tour covers 0.6 km in about 45 minutes (age 5 and up, at Dárda utca 2). It is 12 C inside all year.
How do you buy Buda Castle Cave tickets?
Online only, in advance. The national park sells through GetYourGuide, from $19, and turns away walk-ups.
The Duna-Ipoly National Park page is blunt: tickets must be bought online beforehand, and there is no ticket sale at the entrance. Its booking button goes to GetYourGuide, which makes the Buda Castle Cave tour we list the official ticket, not a reseller's add-on. The listing carries 4.6 stars from 7,716 reviews.
Tour times are released weeks or days ahead, and groups are capped at 25. In summer and over Christmas the slots fill. Tours start on time and latecomers cannot join, so give yourself 15 minutes to find the meeting point. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

The national park's own cave tour, booked online: 40 minutes to 1.5 hours underground with a park guide, at a steady 12 C.
Check dates Tour detailsWhich tour should you book, short or normal?
The normal tour if everyone is 12 or older; the short one for families with younger children.
Both tours are guided, lit and on paved paths. The normal route goes deeper and spends more time in the natural limestone chambers. The short one enters straight from the street at Dárda utca and is the only option for children aged 5 to 11. One September 2026 reviewer on the short tour with her parents called it "swift, [...] still very thorough and informative".
Note the two meeting points. The normal tour gathers at the Holy Trinity Column on Szentháromság tér, opposite Matthias Church, and walks to the entrance. The short tour meets at the cave door itself.
| Normal tour | Short tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | 1.5 km | 0.6 km |
| Time | About 1.5 hours | About 45 minutes |
| Minimum age | 12 | 5 |
| Meeting point | Holy Trinity Column, Szentháromság tér | Cave entrance, Dárda utca 2 |

What do you see in the Buda Castle Cave?
Natural limestone caverns hollowed out by warm springs, medieval cellars cut into the rock, a former prison and Second World War shelters.
Castle Hill is a cap of travertine over marl and limestone. Warm water rising through the rock dissolved chambers underneath, and from the Middle Ages the residents dug cellars down to meet them. The result is a mix: rough natural caverns, then vaulted cellars some 800 years old, then concrete and brick from the 1940s, when the system served as a bomb shelter during the siege of Budapest.
The guides cover geology and history in roughly equal measure. This is not a dripstone cave, so do not come expecting a postcard of stalactites. Come for the sense of a city layered on top of its own underground.

What should you wear and bring?
A warm layer, closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Leave the stroller and the snacks behind.
The cave holds 12 C (54 F) all year, which feels cold in August and mild in January. The listing asks for warm clothing, closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Strollers, food, drink and pets are not allowed, and there is no phone signal below ground.
Photos need the guide's permission and the group's; video is not allowed. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, or else anyone with claustrophobia: passages narrow in places and there is no quick way out.
Is the Buda Castle Cave the same as the Labyrinth or the Hospital in the Rock?
No. They are three separate sites with different operators, entrances and tickets, all under the same hill.
The Labyrinth of Buda Castle at Úri utca 9 is a privately run attraction in another part of the cave system, per its own site. You walk it on your own, following arrows, past wax figures, stone fragments and a pitch-dark section; it trades on the legend that Vlad Dracula was held here. A guide by Hungary Unlocked puts adult entry at HUF 2,500 and the inside at 16 to 18 C.
The Hospital in the Rock at Lovas út 4/c is a museum of the wartime emergency hospital and Cold War nuclear bunker, visited only on guided tours. Its price list shows EUR 30 for the English-language adult visit. Our ranking: the Buda Castle Cave for nature and history, the Hospital in the Rock for the 20th century, the Labyrinth only if you have children who like being spooked.

Which tours go underground on Castle Hill?
The cave tour itself, a WWII walk that visits a shelter in the system, and a night tour built on the hill's legends.
The WWII siege and bomb shelter tour walks the hill above and below ground, with a cellar and an original shelter from the 1944-45 siege; it is 14 and up. The vampires night tour is storytelling with a costumed guide, Dracula included, and better for teenagers than for history readers.
Pair the cave with the free courtyards and the bastion terraces; the full list of what costs nothing is in our guide to free Buda Castle, and door prices for everything else are in Buda Castle tickets and prices.
